How Texting and Smartphone Usage Impacts Your Neck & Spine

As with all technology, smartphones can have both positive and negative effects on our lives. Having the internet at the tip of your fingers is great, however constantly staring down at your phone puts unnecessary stress on your spine.

What Texting and Smartphone Usage Does to Your Neck and Spine

“The weight seen by the spine increases when flexing the neck at varying degrees. An adult head weighs 10-12 pounds in the neutral position. As the head tilts forward the forces seen by the neck surges to 27 pounds at 15 degrees, 40 pounds at 30 degrees, 49 pounds at 45 degrees and 60 pounds at 60 degrees.”

Practice Proper Posture

Practicing proper posture is a key factor in preventing the spinal damage that smartphone usage can cause. It may seem awkward at first, however keeping your head straight and your chin level to the floor while using your smartphone can save you from undergoing invasive surgery in the future.
