Many people are understandably nervous when attending their first acupuncture session. After all, it’s needles that are being placed in various parts of your body!
However, the acupuncture process is generally painless and can significantly improve the symptoms you were seeking help for in the first place.
Here are just a few things you can expect from your first acupuncture session.
An Initial Consultation
Before your acupuncturist begins the session, they will likely ask you a series of questions about your medical history to get a better sense of what areas of the body they should focus on and what they should avoid. These questions may include asking if you have any preexisting conditions, what medications you are currently taking, what your exercise routine and diet consist of, and why you are seeking acupuncture.
Compose a Treatment Plan
After discussing your symptoms, your acupuncturist will devise a treatment plan for you that will highlight with areas of the body they will be primarily targeting to alleviate your symptoms.
A Set-Up in a Comfortable Environment
Before they begin, your acupuncturist will bring you into a comfortable environment before beginning the process. The environment may consist of a treatment table, soothing aromas, and soft music to make the experience more enjoyable.
You may be asked to remove your clothing and put on a gown depending on what areas they are targeting.
Needle Insertion
Your acupuncturist will give you a heads-up when they are about to insert thin, sterile needles onto the surface of your skin in specific areas of the body.
While you may feel a slight tingling sensation when the needle is inserted, the process is relatively painless. Once all of the needles are in the correct position, many people find the experience calming and relaxing.
