Is Acupuncture Painful? What Patients Should Know

One of the most common reasons people never attempt acupuncture boils down to one fear: “How bad will it hurt?” While the idea of having several needles placed into different parts of your body at once may sound unpleasant, the experience is generally painless.

However, there are some things you should consider before mustering up the courage to book your first appointment.

What are Acupuncture Needles?

The needles used during acupuncture sessions are much different than the needles we’re used to dealing with. Unlike injections or blood draws, acupuncture needles are about the width of a human hair and are not inserted nearly as deep into the skin (typically about 1 mm to 50 mm). When the needles are placed by a professional, many patients report feeling a slight tingling sensation as opposed to pain. Others may experience a dull ache or a feeling of warm pressure at the insertion sites.

What Typically Happens During an Acupuncture Session

Acupuncture is used to help manage a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, tension, muscle spasms, migraines, and joint discomfort. Depending on where your pain is, a licensed practitioner will place the thin needles in various areas of your body with the intention of mitigating the pain. Generally, the needles are left in for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.
