Back-to-School Backpack Tips from a Chiropractor

With school starting up again, a lot of focus goes into supplies, routines, and getting kids out the door on time. But there’s one thing that tends to fly under the radar: the backpack. And more importantly, how it’s worn.

It might not seem like a big deal, but day after day, an overloaded or poorly fitted backpack can lead to a lot more than just a sore shoulder, including muscle tension, neck stiffness, fatigue, or back pain.

Start with the Fit

Bags that hang too low or ride up too high tend to cause issues. A good fit usually means the backpack sits just above the hips and doesn’t swing around when your child moves. That stability matters.

What’s Inside Matters Too

Kids often carry way more than they need — a few extra books, maybe a tablet, or some loose items. Over time, all of that adds up. It helps to take a few minutes every week to lighten the load. Aim for no more than 10–15% of your child’s weight.

Watch How It’s Worn

Both shoulder straps should be used. It sounds obvious, but one-strap carrying is still common and puts all the weight on one side. Chest straps or waist belts can also make a difference, especially for heavier bags.

Look for Small Signs

If your child is constantly adjusting their bag, leaning forward, or rubbing their shoulders at the end of the day — that’s a red flag. It may not seem serious, but those patterns often lead to tension and discomfort that can build up.

If something feels off, it may be worthwhile getting it checked out. Merckling Family Chiropractic can help assess posture, alignment, and any underlying tension before it becomes a bigger issue. Contact us today to learn more.
