Evening Routines That Promote Better Spinal Health & Sleep

A good night’s sleep is more important than many of us realize. At Merkling Family Chiropractic, we believe that proper sleep is essential for our well-being. Teaming up with Saavta Mattresses, we are promoting some of the most effective evening routines that will promote better spine health, which in turn promotes better sleep.

Gentle Evening Stretches

Light stretching in the evening loosens up muscles and relieves pressure on the spine. Some of the most effective stretches that will promote spine health include:

  • Cat-cow stretch
  • Child’s pose
  • Knees-to-chest
  • Neck rolls

Use Hot or Cold Therapy

If you suffer from chronic stiffness and back pain, it may be ideal to utilize hot or cold therapy before winding down for bedtime. A heating pad could alleviate a wide range of muscle and joint-related aches and pains since it helps the muscles relax by increasing blood flow. An ice pack offers relief from sprains and strains by numbing and area and slowing down nerve activity. Apply one or the other, depending on your discomfort, around 15 minutes before bedtime.

Good Sleep Posture That Will Help You Wind Down
Proper sleep posture prevents spinal misalignment overnight. When you get into bed, be mindful of your position. It is preferred to sit down on the bed before lying down sideways. Place a pillow between your legs to better support your spine. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under your knees to avoid extended pressure in your lower back.
