The Common Myths About Chiropractic Care

There are many swirling rumors regarding chiropractic care that give the practice a bad rep and prevent some people from seeking the care they need.

In reality, chiropractic care is crucial for the physical and emotional health of individuals who struggle with everyday aches and pains, posture and overall body movement. Visiting the chiropractor can improve the quality of your life significantly if you tune out the horrifying myths and look into the real facts behind it.

Here are some common myths about chiropractic care that should really be debunked.

Myth: Chiropractic care is dangerous for newborns.

Some people assume that chiropractic adjustments on newborns is too much strain on their little bodies and can do more harm than good. However, this kind of care can be crucial for an infant’s development.

Fact: Chiropractic care can be beneficial to newborns.

While in utero and during childbirth, babies undergo movements and strain on their bodies that can affect nerves and muscles that are often overlooked. Gentle manipulations performed by a chiropractor can release tension in their muscles and correct nerve problems.

Chiropractic care also eases symptoms of colic, strengthens their immune systems and reduces their fussiness and irritability.

Most of the things your newborn is so fussy about are related to physical discomfort, and can easily be corrected with a chiropractic adjustment.

Myth: Chiropractors are not real medical professionals.

Some people believe that all chiropractors do is crack people’s backs when in fact, they undergo medical training and school just like all doctors.

Fact: Chiropractors are licensed practitioners.

Chiropractors are required to complete seven to eight years of post-high school schooling, including a four year Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) program in the state of New York.

Before they can become licensed, chiropractors must undergo extensive medical training in chiropractic care and earn a chiropractic degree.

Throughout their education, chiropractic students also must take a series of exams given to them by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners to determine their fitness and knowledge of chiropractic care.

Myth: Chiropractors only treat back pain.

When people think of chiropractors, they often picture them adjusting people’s backs and aligning spines, and while that is true, they do much more than just focusing on the patient’s backs.

Fact: Chiropractors utilize different therapies to treat different joints and muscles throughout the body.

Chiropractors are familiar with joint mobilization, muscle therapy, heat therapy, soft tissue therapy, and electrical stimulation that is used to improve mobility and reduce pain and stiffness in the shoulders, hips, and shoulders.

Chiropractic adjustments and techniques can also treat headaches, arthritis and other conditions that cause everyday pain.

Myth: Once you go in for a chiropractic adjustment, you will have to go for them the rest of your life.

Some pain and physical problems do not last forever and just because you seek out the help of a chiropractor does not mean that you will need them your whole life.

Fact: You can stop going to the chiropractor on your own accord.

Sometimes it only takes one or two visits to the chiropractor to get that kink out of your neck or knot out of your shoulder, and you may never go back again.

However, even if you find that your symptoms have improved from chiropractic care, some patients continue to go for daily visits to keep it that way.

But there is no contract that binds you to chiropractor care for life.
