Common Back Injuries in the Workplace

While working long hours hunched over a desk for most of the day, most people are bound to encounter some issues involving their neck and back. Injuries can result from poor posture at your desk and strenuous activity performed at work.

Fortunately, at Merckling Family Chiropractic, we’re here to help you alleviate injuries that can occur in the workplace and offer different chiropractic treatments that can alleviate these injuries.

Many factors in the workplace can contribute to neck/back problems that we likely do not even realize. However, just a few simple corrections in our everyday work routine can prevent such issues from happening in the first place. Factors include:

Posture

When sitting at a desk all day, we often neglect how our posture for an extended period can result in neck/back injuries. Poor posture can take a toll on your body when sitting in a particular position. It has been linked to chronic headaches, shoulder pain, and TMJ dysfunction. It also can lead to problems such as fatigue (from over-taxed muscles supporting a misaligned spine); muscle aches in your neck, back, arms, and legs; and stiff, painful joints (which may eventually lead to degenerative osteoarthritis.)

Thankfully, posture is something that can be improved. When sitting at your desk, it is essential to remember to have your feet resting on the floor with your knees and hips bent 90 degrees, keep the arch in your lower back maintained, and have your hips touching the back of the chair with your breastbone lifted and your shoulder blades in toward each other. These practices will reduce the risk of back/neck-related injuries resulting from poor posture.

Lifting

If your job requires lifting heavy objects, you may be at risk for back/neck injuries. Lifting objects excessively, especially at an incorrect angle, can lead to cumulative back/neck issues. While lifting heavy objects, it is vital to maintain a proper position and angle that will not affect your back. Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.
