If you’ve never visited a chiropractor before, the experience may seem daunting. However, it doesn’t have to be. Chiropractors are here to help you with your pain and discomfort, and during your first appointment, they will ease your anxieties and evaluate all of your concerns by addressing the issues that are affecting your joints, spine, muscles, and nervous system.
Here is what you can generally expect from your very first chiropractor appointment.
Health History Overview
Your chiropractor will usually require new patients to complete paperwork that gives them a better understanding of what they’re dealing with. They may have you list:
- Your medical history
- Current symptoms or pain
- Past injuries or procedures
- Lifestyle habits
- Any medications you’re currently taking.
Chiropractors want to manage your symptoms in the most effective way they can. The only way for them to do that is by thoroughly understanding the factors that may be contributing to your discomfort through a patient history evaluation.

Consultation
After reading through your history, your chiropractor will often conduct a consultation to identify your primary concerns, whether it be a stiff neck or back pain. They’ll ask you how long your symptoms have lasted, how they affect your everyday life, and what you hope to achieve from chiropractic care.
Physical Exam
Some chiropractors may conduct a physical exam to ensure that you are in proper condition to receive chiropractic care. They may do a posture check, a range of motion test, and palpation (feeling) for any areas of tightness, misalignment, or anything that may hinder your chiropractic treatment.
First Adjustment (If Needed).
If your chiropractor deems it safe and necessary, they may perform an adjustment during your first visit. This could include:
- Soft tissue manipulation
- Stretching or mobilization
- Spinal manipulation
After the adjustment, they will often give you aftercare recommendations, such as light stretches you can do at home, or heat or ice therapy that will alleviate any lingering symptoms.
