Tips To Help With Back Pain as You Travel for the Holidays

Traveling can take a toll on your body, especially your back. Sitting for hours in cars, planes, buses, and trains, as well as sleeping in awkward positions can be hard on your back. These holiday travel tips can help you enjoy the journey by preventing back pain.

Take Stretch Breaks
If you’re taking a road trip, it’s always best to take breaks at rest stops every two hours. Sitting for long periods compresses your back’s discs, which can cause lower back pain. When stopping for gas, getting out of the car to pump the gas yourself instead of having the attendant do it is always good for a quick stretch. On a plane, train, or bus, try to stand every 30 to 60 minutes to stretch your muscles.

Support Your Spine
Cushioning your lumbar spine (the lower back) is the key to maintaining your spine’s neutral curvature. You can support your lumbar spine while traveling by wedging a rolled-up jacket, sweater, or blanket behind you to form a make-shift lumbar pillow. This will also help your neck and upper back stay in the proper position.

Bring Cold Packs and Heat Packs
Both ice and heat can be great for reducing back pain while traveling. Ice packs can reduce inflammation, and heat packs are good for increasing blood flow, which is helpful for back pain.
