Neck Pain

Understanding the Causes of Neck Pain

The neck or cervical spine supports the weight of our head and is incredibly flexible – able to move in every direction making it very susceptible to injury. Stress and emotional tension cause the muscles to contract resulting in restriction in motion or misalignments in the vertebra of the neck. Postural stress from the neck bending too far forward can result from computer work, phone texting, and watching TV. This can contribute to the tightening of muscles, placing additional stress on the vertebral joints and discs.

Car accidents frequently cause a whiplash or rebounding injury to the cervical spine leading to muscle strain with injury to the vertebral joints, discs, and ligaments. Degenerative disorders such as osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis can all produce joint inflammation causing pressure on the nerves resulting in pain. Many people with neck pain also experience headaches which are frequently resultant from the muscle tension and joint irritation in the cervical spine.
